Preserving Heritage with Smart Vertical Access for Europe’s Tallest Church Tower
Project Overview
The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal (Cathedral of Our Lady) in Antwerp is one of the most iconic Gothic structures in Europe and the tallest church tower in the Benelux region, standing at 123 meters. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral underwent a major renovation to preserve its structural integrity and historical significance for future generations. This iconic building was built between 1352 and 1521. The current renovation work will ensure that the building is ready for the next 150 years! The project is led by Group Monument, a specialist in heritage restoration.

Challenge
Renovating a centuries-old cathedral in the heart of a busy city presents unique logistical and technical challenges. The vertical access solution had to be compact, non-invasive, and capable of transporting both personnel and heavy materials without compromising the structure’s integrity. The hoist also needed to operate safely in a public and historically sensitive environment.
RAXTAR Solution
RAXTAR supplied a RX2040 passenger and material hoist, capable of transporting up to 2,000 kg. The hoist was installed with minimal impact on the historic façade and provided reliable vertical access throughout the renovation. In addition, Group Monument expanded its fleet with five RX918 hoists, further enhancing their capacity for future restoration projects.
Outcome
The RX2040 hoist enabled safe and efficient vertical logistics during the restoration of the cathedral. Its performance and adaptability contributed to the preservation of one of Belgium’s most treasured landmarks. The project highlights RAXTAR’s ability to deliver sensitive and effective access solutions for heritage sites.
