Chapter Living London Bridge

London, United Kingdom

Building a Student Community on the London Skyline

Project Overview
Chapter Living London Bridge is a 39-storey student accommodation tower located near London Bridge in central London. Developed by Mace, the building reaches a height of 138 meters (453 feet) and has recently topped out. The project is part of the Chapter Living portfolio, offering high-quality student housing in the heart of the city.

Customer: Mace
Segment: High-rise student accommodation
Status: Completed

Challenge
Constructing a high-rise in a dense urban environment like central London presents unique logistical and safety challenges. Efficient vertical access was essential to maintain construction speed and ensure safe façade installation, especially given the tight site constraints.

RAXTAR Solution
RAXTAR provided a twin configuration hoist system equipped with hydraulic ramps. These ramps bridge the 800 mm gap between the hoist and the building, enabling smooth and safe access for workers and materials. This solution significantly improved the speed and safety of façade installation during the build.

According to Tom Mott, Associate Director at Mace, the decision to work with RAXTAR was driven by the hydraulic ramp solution and the ability to operate without a common tower. He emphasized the value of early design engagement, which allowed for a tailored approach to the project’s unique challenges.

Benefits of the RAXTAR hydraulic ramp:

↗ less down time

↗ improvement of efficiency

↗ cost saving and reliable solution

Outcome
The RAXTAR twin hoist system with hydraulic ramps has proven to be a reliable and cost-effective solution for this high-rise project. It has:

Reduced downtime

Improved operational efficiency

Delivered a safe and streamlined façade installation process

Tom Mott noted that the hoist speed and data feedback contributed to efficient site operations. “The hydraulic ramps were a key differentiator,” he said. “It was the first time I’ve used them, and I would definitely opt for them again in the future.”

He also praised the collaboration and service provided by RAXTAR:

“They reacted quickly and efficiently to operational issues as they arose. The pre-planning of erection, climbing, and dismantling operations was very good and continually improved throughout the project.”
